salivary glands: secrete saliva
epiglottis: cartilaginous flap, prevents food from entering the larynx
esophagus: pipe to the stomach
stomach: stores food; twists and kneads food to break it up
spleen: assists the liver; removes damaged blood cells
liver: secretes bile; reduces/removes toxins (along with 250 other functions)
gallbladder: stores bile
pancreas: produces fluid that breaks down nutrients; makes insulin to digest sugar
small intestine: breaks down food
appendix: no function in humans; digests food in animals
large intestine: reabsorbs water, salts, and eletrolytes
rectum: eliminates solid waste
